John Joseph Jenkins, 87, died Monday April 15, 2019 in Hospice care in Port Orange, Fla. Service will be at Woodlawn United Methodist Church, Derby, Kan. on July 13 at 11:00 a.m. The burial will immediately follow the service at the El Paso Cemetery, Derby, Kan.

Born on January 1932 in Knoxville, Iowa to Frank Frush Jenkins, Sr. and Lois Virginia Overton, John grew up on the farm and graduated from Knoxville High School in 1950.

Drafted into the Army, John made a career of the military. He served in Korea and Vietnam earning the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star and four Air Medals. He retired after 23 years as a Lt. Colonel.

John married Jean Marie Richards June 14, 1958. To this union, eight children were born. After retiring from the military, they settled in Derby, Kan.

John attended Wichita State University, receiving a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. While working on his master’s degree Jean was diagnosed with cancer. John and Jean were married for 31 years before she passed away.  

John married Judy Ann Smith August 8, 1991. Judy brought four kids to their union, making a total of 12 children between them. They lived in Port Orange, Fla. and spent time keeping track of their growing family, playing cards and traveling.  

John was a wonderful son, a devoted husband, an understanding father and awesome grandpa. Family was very important to him in all stages of his life. 

Left to cherish his memory include his wife Judy, his siblings: Jeanne Smith and Stephen Jenkins; his sons: Mark, David, Brian and James; his daughters: Kimberly Mook, Rhonda Buttel, Pamela Veneklasen and Sandy Hill; his step children: Cindy Hauser, Christy Nagengast, Craig Smith and Cory Smith; 29 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren with another one on the way; plus many other family members and friends.
